New year, new style! We’ve rounded up the interior trends we predict will shape the home in 2017.
A time to embrace change, January offers new beginnings and the perfect excuse to make improvements in our interiors too. To help you keep your home on top form, all year long, we’ve rounded up the five key trends we think will dominate in 2017.
1. NAVY IS THE NEW BLACK
Often snubbed in favour of a more conventional black, it’s time for navy to enjoy its moment in the spotlight. The great thing about navy blue is, it creates a striking contrast when teamed with tricky metallics like copper and brass. It’s also good at elevating lighter colours such as whites and silvers, which struggle to hold much personality on their own. We predict that darker, dramatic colours will rule this year.
2. VELVET CRUSH
Velvet is no longer dark and gothic. It’s already made a strong comeback in fashion, and now it’s creeping its way into our homes too. Think jewel velvet sofas in opulent tones of emerald green, ruby red and dark midnight blue. Decadent glamour never looked so good.
3. RAW TEXTURES
Clean sheens of rose gold, copper and marble are finally taking a step back and rougher textures such as concrete, lava stone, basalt and clay are moving into their place. Designers are looking towards uneven textures for an edgier take on the industrial trend. Look out for a surge in raw, organic materials in the home over the next 12 months.
4. RUGS AS ART
Forget fancy artwork, statement rugs will make just a big of an impact for half the effort. Rugs used in replace of art is set to be a big trend in the interior world this year. And the great news is, they come in a wide variety of textures, styles and sizes, so you can be as adventurous as you like with your design choices. Instead of being the forgotten afterthought, the rug will finally take centre stage in the home.
5. URBAN ESCAPE
2016 was a rather dramatic year, and the interior world’s answer to help calm the storm in 2017 is to embrace bringing the outdoors in. Zingy shades of green will conjure up foliage and calming forest-scapes from all over the globe, helping you to keep a peaceful home and mind — even in a city centre high-rise. And thanks to Pantone recently hailing a shade of leaf-green as their colour of 2017, we can expect to see a lot of this colour trickling into the home.
6. CORK IS BACK
Our love for natural materials continues, with cork being resurrected from the ’70s and making its way back into the limelight. Predicted to take the crown away from marble, expect to see it everywhere this year, whether that’s on floors, furniture or walls. It also has the added bonus of being naturally insulating, keeping the warmth in and noise out.
