Alder Hey
This autumn, we’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with Alder Hey Children’s Charity, a relationship that began in 2014 and has since raised over £5.1 million, thanks to the incredible generosity of our colleagues and customers.
Together, we’ve helped fund vital initiatives, including key appeals like the ‘7 in 10 Children’s Mental Health’ and the ‘Surgical Neonatal’ appeals, As well as the creation of Alder Hey’s pioneering Research and Innovation Centre. Since opening in 2016, the Centre has welcomed over 81,000 children and young people into research studies, with more than 200 active projects at any given time. This year’s PJ campaign will directly support Alder Hey’s nurse and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) led research program; work that’s transforming care and outcomes for children across the UK.
Meet Lillie
Before Lillie was born, doctors diagnosed her with Gastroschisis, a rare condition where the bowel develops outside the body. Just two hours after birth, she was rushed to Alder Hey for surgery, which was completed successfully. Three weeks later, Lillie was discharged and has thrived ever since. Mum Ainsley told us: “I honestly cannot thank Alder Hey enough – if it wasn’t for them, my little girl wouldn’t be here.”
Meet Oscar
After a quad biking accident, Oscar suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple skull and spine fractures. Alder Hey teams carried out over six complex procedures to rebuild his face and save his life. Just nine days later, he was home in time for Christmas with his mum, dad and little brother Monty. Jessica, Oscar’s mum, said: “They didn’t just save Oscar’s life, they held ours together when it felt like our world was falling apart.”
Meet Mia
Mia was born with hearing loss in her right ear and has struggled despite trying many hearing aids, even learning to lip read from a young age. She recently became the first child in the North of England to receive a Sentio ear implant, transforming her everyday life and boosting her passion for performing, dancing and singing. Mia, said: “I love performing and one of the main problems I had was timing for songs, as I couldn’t hear the music in the songs, so this has helped my performance massively.”
Meet Riziah
Riziah was born with Heterotaxy Syndrome, a rare condition that affects her heart and several other organs. Over her nine years she has faced many challenges, yet continues to grow, thrive and inspire those around her with her strength and positivity. Riziah Said: “Alder Hey is the best hospital in the world. They have helped me with all my surgeries and the staff make me feel like I’m a celebrity when I’m there.”
