What is a Christmas gnome?
Christmas gnomes, often known as gonks, take inspiration from Scandinavian folklore and the tradition of house spirits called tomte or nisse. These small, bearded figures were believed to protect homes and farms, with stories suggesting they rewarded kindness and expected respect in return. Today, they’ve become popular Christmas decorations, recognisable by their long beards, oversized hats and playful designs.
Are gonks just for Christmas?
Although Christmas gonks often come dressed in festive reds, greens and winter patterns, gnome decorations can work all year round. Choose neutral colours, natural textures and understated designs that sit comfortably alongside your everyday décor. Wooden ornaments and softer shades are easy to style beyond the festive season, so your favourite gnomes don't have to be packed away with the Christmas decorations.
Choosing the right Christmas gnome for your home
From colourful characters to more understated designs, there's a Christmas gnome to suit different decorating styles. Red, green and white gonks bring a traditional festive feel, while neutral shades and woodland-inspired details work well in more pared-back interiors. Mix different heights, textures and designs to create a display that feels personal, whether you're styling a mantelpiece, shelf or windowsill.
Outdoor Christmas gonks
Give your entrance a seasonal update with outdoor Christmas gonks. Before displaying a gnome on your doorstep, porch or in the garden, check that it's specifically designed for outdoor use and suitable for the conditions it will face. The right design can add a playful finishing touch to your outdoor Christmas decorations.
Gnome-themed decor for every room
Take the gnome theme beyond your Christmas decorations with playful details throughout your home. Add character to your bedroom with gnome-themed bedding, cushions and throws, or bring a little fun to the kitchen with festive tea towels, mugs and aprons. Whether you prefer a few subtle accents or a more coordinated look, Christmas gonks and gnome-inspired accessories offer plenty of ways to make the season your own.
