Trend alert: Head over heels in Notting Hill

Former rugby ace turned model, Thom Evans falls for West London in serious style.

What do you love about London?

Notting Hill is like its own art gallery, wherever you walk the walls have graffiti, art work or something that makes you stop in your tracks.

What’s your favourite place to hangout?

My favourite pub is The Hollywood Arms in Kensington, you’ll find me there on Sundays having a roast and a pint. You meet people from all walks of life. I love that about British culture – you can’t recreate a proper London pub anywhere else. There are so many different style personalities in one amazing city.

What type of clothes do you feel best in?

I prefer to be smart and I feel at ease in a suit. I’m more relaxed in my personal style and spend a lot of time with my mates catching up in the pub, so weekends are all about jeans and a t-shirt.

The theme of this issue is love, are you a romantic?

Definitely! I flew long haul to surprise someone I was dating and I put my hands over their eyes and said: ‘Guess who?’ I believe in love at first sight to a degree, you just know when the chemistry is right.

Do you have a favourite item from Matalan’s collection?

The denim is so good. I find it hard to find comfortable jeans with my quads being quite large, but your jeans have a really snug fit. Matalan does smart casual really well.

Which male celebrities would you say dress well?
David Beckham always looks good – he’s elegant and masculine. He may have lived all over the world but he’s true to British style and it’s great how he wears flat peak caps.

What do you miss most about playing rugby?
The camaraderie, when you’re playing rugby you don’t really appreciate how special it is. You spend so much time with the guys and have so much banter. I go out with my mates all the time, but it’s not the same.

What’s your biggest challenge with your fitness?
Not being bored! I try and mix it up with exercise. When I played rugby I was quite heavy and stocky, but now I want to be lean and clothes fit and look better, so I box.

What advice do you have for men who want to get fit?
It's staggering how many times I’m in a gym and I see personal trainers grilling guys, no wonder they don’t want to come back. You have to start from scratch – going for a run and slowly building it up. Fitness should be enjoyable, it’s tough work, but it shouldn’t put you off to ever doing it again.
