    What is a Christmas nutcracker?

When it comes to adding a little character to your home, there’s nothing better than a classic Christmas nutcracker, or two. They look just like little soldiers and come in a huge range of sizes and colours. These beautiful and charming wooden-style soldiers stand sentry around your home, and traditionally, they were thought to chase away evil spirits to protect you and your family over the winter.

    Why are nutcrackers called nutcrackers

In years gone by, it was traditional to bring out novelty nutcrackers during the dessert course of a meal as a form of entertainment. They would use nutcrackers in the shape of people, animals and birds to crack open hazelnuts and pecans as part of the festivities during the meal, trying to impress their guests with the creative nutcrackers and exotic nuts on offer.

Over the years, the nutcrackers took the shape of kings, queens and eventually soldiers. The soldier shape was used in the ballet The Nutcracker, where the charming little soldier comes to life and dances the night away thanks to a magical spell. This shape has become synonymous with Christmas thanks to the famous ballet, and that’s where the wooden toy soldier shape came from.

What styles of nutcrackers are there?

Choose traditional standing nutcrackers for around the tree, beside the fireplace or even at either side of your front door.
