Packing for your baby’s first holiday

Heading on your first holiday with baby? Whether you’re jetting off somewhere hot and sunny or have a week of fun planned in a caravan or cosy cottage, you’re bound to be excited about the adventures you’ll have together. The first time they feel sand between their toes, splash in the pool or find their feet at the disco are magical moments you’ll remember forever.

But what should you pack? What are the must-buys and what should you leave behind? Here are our top tips for packing for your baby’s first holiday.

Your baby’s holiday wardrobe

Today we’re talking about clothes to pack for your baby’s first trip, but we’d also recommend making little checklists to cover the other baby essentials. By breaking things down under headings like travel, bathing and skincare, feeding and health, you’ll be less likely to forget something important.

The number of outfits to pack will depend on whether you’ve got any activities planned like swimming. But as a rule of thumb, a day outfit, evening outfit plus bodysuits or sleepsuits will give you enough options without taking you over your luggage allowance. Picking a couple of colour or print themes will make it easy to mix and match your baby’s holiday wardrobe too.

Keep your dinky dude cool and comfortable

With babies, it’s absolutely all about layering! Along with cute dungarees, dresses, skirts, tops and shorts in breathable fabrics, pack plenty of short-sleeve, sleeveless or cami body suits. Think about what you can pop over the top as well as underneath, you’ll need easy to slip on and off cover-up items.

Cardigans, little Macs or summer jackets and lightweight sweatshirts are all really handy. Sun hats are an absolute must to keep baby shaded, but be warned - not all babies are into wearing hats. To help your little one find a favourite, pack several styles, this way you’ll have a back up if any get lost too.

Splash ready protective swimwear

A surf suit covers up more of their skin for splash time and this season Matalan has some adorable prints to choose from. For value plus the cute factor – these simple surf suit sets with matching hats are hard to beat. They’re available in sizes from newborn up.

One Final Tip…

It’s not strictly clothing, but taking familiar bedding can help your baby to feel settled in their new surroundings. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the room temperature to ensure your room is at a safe sleep temperature and adjust your little one’s layers accordingly.
