With travel abroad looking tricky, and staycations likely expensive @Inpolife’s Vickie Neave has been inspired to transform her back garden into a holiday style haven ready for whenever the sunshine hits! Here's her top tips on making your garden a postcard worthy, vacation inspired space.

As we have no idea really when we can next go on holiday, it got me thinking, how great would it be to create a holiday terrace style space in our own garden?! Whilst it may not quite match up to the Balearic Islands, it could still become a relaxing space for the 6 of us to chill out, eat and switch off.

As we have no idea really when we can next go on holiday, it got me thinking, how great would it be to create a holiday terrace style space in our own garden?! Whilst it may not quite match up to the Balearic Islands, it could still become a relaxing space for the 6 of us to chill out, eat and switch off.

We found an area of the garden that was used but not to its full potential. The place we house the garden table where we sit two or three times a year max was a good space, especially with the wisteria roof but the ugly fence panels were not helping it feel very holiday luxe!

Fancy panels are crazy money so instead we looked to Pinterest for inspiration and discovered by using roof battens we could recreate the beautiful panelling I love at a fraction of the cost. We painted them black as a neutral colour base and extended over our wall to create a bench, giving the area more seating and enhancing the chilled out Ibiza feel I wanted. The wisteria I planted 20 years ago has really come into its own, but you could also add in a pergola structure and string across festoon lights to give a different vibe.

I wanted the space to be used like you would on holiday - reading, relaxing, eating, chatting...so adding in textures and cosiness was key. I went quite neutral but I love the fact I could easily add a pop of colour with cushions and Matalan always have a huge range. A basket with blankets for when it gets a bit chilly is a lovely touch. I think a rug could look amazing out here on the floor too - that's next on my shopping list.

The area is shaded making it difficult to grow plants, so I’ve added lots of fake plants in the corners and on the table, which are so good it's hard to tell the difference from the real thing! I’m useless at watering so it saves me an extra job and I’ll bring them into my studio in the colder months. I now have my eye on the resin gnomes I have just spotted on the Matalan website. They will make a great finishing touch!

Already, in the space of a couple of weeks, this area has been used by the 6 of us more than ever. You can often find someone having coffee out there in the mornings, reading, even napping. Lunch, dinner and evening drinks are lovely out there too, it really shows small changes can make all the difference. Obviously, we're a little reliant on the good old British weather but even on a grey day it’s a lovely little reading spot. If I hide just in the corner, it takes the family quite some time to find me, and if I close my eyes I can almost imagine I'm on holiday…
