Following our decision to close our stores almost eight weeks ago we’ve been working tirelessly on preparing our stores for reopening with enhanced health and safety measures and strict social distancing guidelines to ensure we offer the safest shopping environment for you. Given the change in government guidance on 1st May to include Homeware as essential retail in England, we are now pleased to inform you that we are starting to reopen selected stores.
Starting Monday 18th May, following rigorous in-store testing and consultation with industry bodies, our colleagues and our customers, we will be opening an initial 38 stores in England. These stores will operate with enhanced health and safety measures and be fully compliant with social distancing rules. All employees have been trained appropriately and will be provided with full PPE. We are very confident that these safety measures go above and beyond the guidance provided by the Government and Public Health England.
We will initially be re-opening our spacious stores with large Homeware departments and a Click and Collect service. These stores are all located on out of town retail parks, with parking outside, enabling us to effectively adhere to social distancing guidelines. High street stores, stores in shopping centres, our clearance stores and our stores in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will remain closed.
With our new safety measures in place, we are extremely happy to be back serving families across England, and look forward to welcoming our customers back into stores, and our colleagues returning from furlough. We are extremely grateful to all of our colleagues for their huge efforts in caring for our customers and the business, and to our customers for their continued loyalty to Matalan.
A number of stores in England are now open with social distancing and safety measures in place. We are planning other store openings this week, so please check via ‘Store Finder’ to see if your nearest store is open.
Reduced the number of customers allowed in store and changed the layout so you have more space.

Please follow the guidance and ask member of staff in store if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing you in store soon.
We are extremely proud to be able to help our wider Matalan community during this challenging time, which include our charities; Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity and the NSPCC. Having worked with both charities for some time now, and donating an overall combined figure of over £13 million we know what huge pressures the COVID-19 crisis has put on them. Their fundraising activities, challenges and runs have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely. We are working with the charities on a number of initiatives and donations to help support them through this challenging time and to ensure that they can still complete the invaluable work they do, day in, day out. They need our help now more than ever before.
We are working closely with local hospitals and charities in the North West, to help support them through this challenging time and to ensure that they can still complete the invaluable work they do. We have donated comfortable clothing & home ware supplies to Alder Hey Children’s hospital for their staff. We have also provided clothing and supplies to hospitals across Liverpool, in particular supporting the elderly wards for patients who sometimes don’t have suitable clothing to change into and certainly during this time where visiting is restricted, whilst also acting as a thank you to the staff for their tireless work they are doing.
We’ve also increased our fundraising efforts for our charity partners by asking our colleagues and customers to get involved, from the 2.6 challenge to the Isolation Staycation, to raise vital funds so these fantastic charities can continue their amazing work during this challenging time.
But you don’t need to take part in a challenge to make a donation, every penny helps.
We’re still offering home delivery, so we’ll come to you. Please bear with us, as deliveries are taking a bit longer than expected at the moment.
Check out our delivery times for more information. If we need to make any changes to our delivery times, we’ll keep you posted with updates on our website, our app and social media channels.
Hermes is currently operating a drop off service for all customers. If you do not wish to open the door, your parcel will be marked with the signature, Covid 19, this is for the safety of the delivery team and all customers.
Our Click and Collect service is available in stores that are open, so you can choose to order online and collect in store if you prefer.
Along with the rest of the retail industry, we continue to operate our online business closely following the Government guidance, going above and beyond to ensure the safety of our colleagues at all times. We are pleased to have received approval from the Environmental Health Office, following their visit to our Knowsley Distribution Centre and deemed the site a safe working environment. We have since introduced further enhanced health and safety measures to ensure our colleagues feel safe in the workplace.
We take our responsibility as a large North West employer extremely seriously, and always endeavor to look after our colleagues and do what’s best for them and their safety. At the end of March we offered our warehouse colleagues across both sites, the option to stay at home and be placed on the Governments furlough scheme, to ensure that those who chose not to come to work have access to the available support packages. Whilst the majority of our colleagues in our Knowsley & Corby DCs still remain on furlough, a small percentage have returned to work on a phased basis.
With our enhanced health and safety measures in place, we will continue to operate online and look forward to welcoming our warehouse colleagues back in the near future.
We understand that returns will be tricky during this difficult time so please don’t worry, if you have purchased goods from us we will refund them as long as you have your receipt. Once the government restrictions are lifted, and we are back to normal, we will revert to our standard returns policy of 14 days. We will notify you by email once we are operating as normal.
