A likely staple in any modern wardrobe, jeans have been around since the mid-1800s, surviving decades upon decades in the ever-changing world of fashion.
With jeans, there’s something for everyone. From a basic bootcut to fancy flares, or random rips to detailed with diamantes, you’re sure to find a style to suit your needs and complete your outfit.
But with so many different types of this durable denim, what kind of jeans are the top choice around the world? Using Google search data, we’ve looked at the most searched for style by country over the last 12 months, to reveal the most popular jeans around the world.
It looks like moms the word, as out of the 18 countries we researched, ‘mom jeans’ came out on top in 13 of them. This style racked up a staggering 3,469,000 searches in the USA alone, with an additional 1,101,000 in Germany and 1,096,000 in England. Mom jeans (who got their name as the style rose in popularity amongst moms and housewives in the 70s) are high-waisted but fit loosely around the thighs and hips, perfect for a more relaxed fit.
Yet another style named after a family member, ‘boyfriend jeans’ are the top choice in South Africa and India, with 117,400 and 600,400 searches each. Named due to the fact they look like you ‘borrowed your boyfriends jeans’ the more masculine style tends to be looser fitting, with longer legs and a baggier crotch area. After bagging yourself a pair of these, maybe your boyfriend will be borrowing *your* jeans!
The southern hemisphere however looks to break the mould, opting for ‘ripped jeans’ as their denim of choice in Australia (136,100) and New Zealand (25,700). Prior to the 70s, ripped jeans were mainly associated with the less fortunate, struggling to replace their worn-out clothing. After gaining popularity in the 70s and 80s during the unravelling punk-rock moment, ripped jeans started to symbolise rebellion and expression of personal style, making the holes and rips more of a conscious fashion choice for both men and women.
Contrary to the results of the other 17 countries, ‘skimmer jeans’ seem to be all the rage in France, with a search volume of 140,300 in the last 12 months. Skimmer jeans (also known as ‘pedal pushers’) skim the ankle or the calf, making the practical pair the perfect option to show off your shoes. These jeans are ideal for warmer days as the shorter length makes them cooler, so its no wonder the fashionable French are all over this practical style.
So, there we have it – ‘mom jeans’ are officially the most searched for jeans in the world. Whether you’re on the hunt for men’s jeans, women’s jeans or just some jeans & a nice top, the ever-changing style of the durable denim makes it easy to find the perfect pair for you.
