Welcome to our first virtual Matalan womenswear showcase, giving you an exclusive preview of our AW20 collection – from the mood of the season, to our catwalk and key looks.
For the AW20 season, the Matalan womenswear collections take inspiration from the wild wild west, and the great outdoors. Western influences are seen through their paisley prints, the mix of soft and tough textures and the key shapes and styles of midi dresses and denim. Borg, khakis and hiking boots, take us on an outdoor adventure with hints of utility running through as an undertone.
Volume, textures and layering are all key styling details for outerwear this season. The puffa is still here, and won’t be going anytime soon, extreme volume and optimal comfort, what’s not to love? New styles include the cropped puffa jacket for that cool sports luxe vibe. Gilets are a key layering staple, whether it’s a borg, styled with a paisley midi dress for a more folk inspired look, or a padded one paired with leather look joggers and boots for a cool casual style. The teddy coat is one of the go to styles for the season, warm and cosy and available in a cornflower blue, powdered pink and tan.
Did we hear you say more prints? Prints are huge. Whether it’s bold and colourful, romantic and muted, dainty and ditsy, or the all round favourite; animal, you name it, we’ve got it covered for AW20. Bold floral blooms seen on midi dresses are tough, but softened with details such as frilled sleeves and hemlines whilst softer florals are romanticised with chiffon style fabrics and georgette style textures. These soft lightweight fabrics when mixed with blue denims give that effortlessly cool look. Animal print, the neutral print of the season, and any season for the matter, taps in to the highly sought after western trend when paired with black denim kick flares and structured denim jumpsuits. If there hasn’t already been enough drama in 2020, well we’re about to create some more; Arm Drama. Yes you heard right, arm details are key for the season; ruffles, frills, puff sleeves, ruching, exaggerated, peplum, you get the idea, it’s all about the arm. Seen throughout the AW20 ranges across dresses, blouse, knitwear, jersey and outwear, this is trend you can’t and won’t want to miss!
Footwear & Accessories take on a tough look for the season, with hiking and biker boots taking centre stage. Knitwear is exaggerated with chunky knits for added volume, and muted beanies in neutral tones offer that cool utility style. Key shapes and styles from the 1960s make an appearance in heeled and flat loafers, adorned with buckles or fringing, whilst the ladylike mock crock bag with the horsebit detailing offers that classic style everyone needs in their wardrobe.
